Faith That Divides

Two temptations face anyone reading Jesus' sayings about fire and division: explaining them away, or turning them into weapons. Alex Cain proposes guardrails against both, arguing that Jesus speaks these words from love and calls us to make him our highest affection. His lament over Jerusalem as a mother hen gathering her chicks sets the tone, and the sermon keeps in view those who have been wounded by harsh religion.
