A con man who passed himself off as a ship's surgeon in the Korean War explained that impersonating others let him be somebody, since he was just a bum. The coin bearing Caesar's image in Matthew 22 leads Rev. Cerveny to ask what bears God's image: we do, created as living image bearers and restored in Christ, the true image of the invisible God. The gospel frees us from the long con of manufacturing our own identity.
