The Declaration's claim that all men are created equal is read as a theological statement that only a Creator can bear. Tracing equality to the image of God in Genesis 1, through John Locke and the words of the Episcopal burial rite, the opening session asks whether equality can stand once cut from its roots, and faces honestly the contradiction of Jefferson writing these words while enslaving hundreds of people.
